Your Gun dog can’t be as bad as Charlie was

A Picture Of Me And Charlie About A Month Into Training Using The Manuels.
I know a lot of you are frustrated with your gundog, Today I would like to share with you a funny stories of when I got Charlie my cocker spaniel.

Most of you know Charlie came from a Rescue centre when he was 14 months old. And before I discovered the Lost manuels which helped me train Charlie, He was totally oblivious to my wishes, to turn him into a gun dog. I think I may have given up and taken him back if my kids had not fallen in love with him.

Funny things Charlie did in the first month of having him.

The Day I Was Late For Work

I usually get up about 5.00am. I take Charlie for a walk then leave him in the garden when I have my breakfast then call Charlie in about 6am as he lives in my conservatory. It was particularly cold about -4 that morning with a couple of inches of snow on the ground.

As usual I returned from Charles walk about 5.40 and went to have some breakfast. At 6am I called Charlie but he wouldn’t come. I went outside and he had a bone which he was chewing.

Charlie thought I was playing as he kept running round the garden with the bone and would not let me get near him. I was getting annoyed but Charlie thought it was a game. I fell over in the snow, I’m sure he was laughing.

He kept running and barking, I was about to explode,

• I tried treats, he kept running.
• I tried ignoring him he kept running and barking.
• I went to the gate and pretended to leave and he came within a few yards but was to quick for me to grab him.
• I even went to the house and got another bone but this was not working

I eventually got him about 6.35am, it took me 35 minutes to catch him and our garden is only 30yds by 20yds. Even then I think he had just got bored with the game he was playing with me.

I was 30 minutes late starting work, and furious with Charlie.

Charlie was a disaster when I had him but now it’s so different. A lot of my shooting collages rate him as the best on the shoot.

Why am I telling you these stories, well I guess you are as fed up of expert telling you how easy everything is, I was. I am still not an expert on training a gundog, I mean I don’t know all the training methods nor do I want to.

I do know what works though and it’s not necessarily the techniques you use. What is really important is you give your gundog a clear message and never veer from it. That’s why it’s important to choose a method you are happy with and stick with it.

The sticking is the most important part. If you want a good place to start why not start where I did with Charlie click below to find out more about the Gun Dog Training Manuels
